Hyde Art Gallery is excited to host Mojaveland, an immersive social practice project
that redefines the boundaries of art, play, and community engagement. For this exhibition,
the Hyde Gallery has been transformed into a fully interactive, six-hole miniature
golf course.
Founded by artist Anna Stump, Mojaveland operates at the intersection of visual art,
performance, and recreation, transforming the familiar landscape of the Mojave Desert
into a site of creative exploration and collective experience. Mojaveland utilizes
the unexpected medium of artist-designed miniature golf to challenge assumptions about
how audiences encounter contemporary art. This innovative approach invites participants
of all ages to not merely observe but to inhabit and interact with the work - foregrounding
accessibility, inclusivity, and joy as central components of the artistic encounter.
Included in this exhibition are miniature golf holes and accompanying artwork created
by Anna Stump, Ted Meyer, Abe Delacerda, Ben Allanoff, Greg Mendoza, David Isakson,
Lynda Keeler, Clark Hunter, Jeff Johnson, Bill Leigh Brewer, Joe Alvarez, Kim Reasor,
David Lipson, and Randy Ranieri.
The prototype site, Mojaveland 1.0, operated in Twentynine Palms from 2021 to 2023.
The park featured 13 mini golf holes designed by local desert artists, along with
a sculpture and mural garden and a teaching area. Although the site ultimately closed
due to accessibility challenges which could not be resolved, it proved the power of
combining art and community in one vibrant space.
Today Mobile Mojaveland, which current inhabits the Hyde Art Gallery, keeps that spirit
alive by bringing portable mini golf holes and art activities directly into the community.
Mobile Mojaveland is supported by generous local partners, including the Public Arts
Advisory Committee, the Military Spouses Association, the Greenwood Foundation, and
the Immordino Charitable Foundation.
Looking ahead, Mojaveland 2.0 will be built on four acres of public land in Twentynine
Palms. The new park will carry forward the best of Mojaveland 1.0 while adding full
accessibility and expanded community programming. With their Conditional Use Permit
granted in October 2024, Mojaveland 2.0 is on track to open in 2026.
Mojaveland is fiscally sponsored by 501(c)(3) Aha Projects, and receives funding through various foundations. Mojaveland is a social practice project of artist and activist Anna Stump.
