Course Prerequisites A C or Pass grade or higher in Music 180 or equivalent. Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description This course will present an overview of jazz drumset styles. The student will be introduced to the various techniques necessary to play in the jazz idiom. The styles of historically significant drummers will be presented and discussed. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Evaluate the various styles of jazz and analyze the historical development of jazz drumming. b. Compare and contrast the differences between historically significant jazz drummers. c. Sight-read the swinging eight-note concept. d. Develop the necessary technique to perform standard jazz drum charts. e. Demonstrate independence skills and patterns with hands and feet. f. Perform representative solo exercises. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Large ensemble rehearsal room with music stands. b. Stereo/video system. c. Standard jazz drum set. 6.
