Prerequisites A C grade or higher or Pass in MUS 001 or MUS 128 or MUS 132 or equivalent. Corequisite None Recommended Preparation None 3. Catalog Description This course will introduce the student to concepts and skills utilized in improvisation. Along the way, students will actively participate in exercises, experiments, and performances utilizing jazz vocabulary, scales, and theory. Major scales and diatonic arpeggios are memorized and applied to various jazz styles. The harmonic minor scale is applied to secondary dominants in chord progressions. 4. Course Objectives At the conclusion of this course, the student will become proficient at spontaneously creating music with the appropriate style for standard jazz repertoire. The student will: a. Play/sing the blues scale, blues melodies, and simple blues solos. b. Improvise melodies based on the major, minor and dominant scales. c. Play/sing arpeggios and improvise phrases based on the ii-V-I chord progression. d. Analyze basic song forms and chord progressions. e. Transcribe simple recorded melodies and solos. 5.
