Prerequisites Audition. Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description This course focuses on performance skills and techniques in preparation for professional applications. Intermediate and advanced level dance students rehearse and perform choreography in a variety of performance venues both on campus and in the community. Though most performances will be scheduled during class time, additional performances may be held during the evening and/or on weekends. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Develop an awareness of performance aesthetics and skills. b. Demonstrate kinesthetic growth in the areas of strength, coordination, rhythm, flexibility, and endurance, in order to perform dance as conceived by the choreographer. c. Identify the various aspects of successful auditioning, including specific auditioning techniques, creating professional resumes, and headshots. d. Differentiate the various aspects of dance production and their significance to the choreographic process. e. Discuss elements of performance, choreography, production design, and observation. f. Apply knowledge of rehearsal management, performance preparation, and interpersonal skills in relating to choreographers, fellow performers, guest artists, and production personnel. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Access to the internet. b. Mirrored dance studio. c. Occasional use of recording equipment, DVD player, and digital projector. 6. The audition process as well as personal management skills including resume development, photo shoots, etc. b. Performance preparation including rehearsal organization, time management, specific performance skills, and assessing site specific dimensions/limitations and their effect on choreography. c. Interpersonal skills when relating to theater personnel, i.e. directors, stage managers, lighting designers, stage hands. d. Rehearsals and performances. 8. Method of Instruction a. Individual and group lecture. b. Practical application of movement theories and/or concepts as they relate to improvisational movement. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Consistent participation in class. b. Demonstration of skills. c. Ability to work cooperatively as an integral member of a dance company. d. Reports, self evaluations, journals. e. Written critical analysis of a dance department sponsored live dance concert. 10. Outside Class Assignments a. Attendance at a department produced dance concert for the purpose of critical analysis. b. Attendance at a dance department sponsored master class. c. Addendum: Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, our students will be able to do the following: Correctly identify and model concepts of professionalism and positive behavior as they relate to rehearsal and performance, including discipline, timeliness, and commitment. Correlate the importance of the various elements involved in creating a complete concert dance work, including lighting and set design, and costume design. Develop aesthetic values as they relate to dance and, based upon these values, will be able to critically think about, and analyze dance as an art form.
